Twenty Five

The afternoon went by in a blur.

Syrinx and the master mages went to our training station with me and the first hundred volunteers. She just observed, while we were split up into groups, and run through a series of basic tests.

The results were strange. And variable. People who had no ability while humanoid suddenly had some abilities in their large form. But among the midshipmen and cadets, more of them could do things in their humanoid form, even without having shifted for the first time. Some of them couldn’t shift at all, but still had some magic talent.

I found it frustrating. Shania took me though trying to create things, move things, heal things, and copy things. But all of it failed.

And yet, when Syrinx got involved, we found I could move from one side of the station to another easily, first as a dragon, and then also as a humanoid. My force punch ability scared the hell out of Shania, and Syrinx kept building bigger and more solid things for me to punch. None of them survived intact.

I kept picking up chatter from the others, as at first only a few could send their thoughts, but as the afternoon wore on, more and more could. And it became apparent that like most mages everywhere, skills varied widely, and what I could not do, others proved to be worth training in.

Finally, as I was thinking about preparing for dinner at George’s, Syrinx gave me a strange look. She then explained how to open a rift, and provided the basics they used for all students being shown it. Apparently most people who could move objects tended to just knock the mock door over the first time, but I put a rift through it with ease, and Syrinx pushed her finger though and back to prove it worked, before nodding at me to close it.

She then had me do a short one big enough for me to walk through and back, and then one from one end of this deck of the station to the other, which we both walked through and back. Then she told me to shift, open one out into space as far as I could, and when I went through I found myself out near the jump point to Earth. When I looked back, Syrinx and Shania were looking beyond me and looking concerned.

In the time of me looking at them, a ship had come through the jump point near to me, and I flinched and flew away from it, instinctively dragging the end of the rift with me. It hitting my rift would have been disastrous, for both the ship which was too big, and the training station getting the mid-section of ship dumped there. Not mention Syrinx and Shania being right there where it went through.

When I stopped, now far enough away to not be collided with by anyone, it occurred to me I had no idea how I’d dragged the rift like that. Syrinx had certainly not described anything like that as being possible.
